TCB With Skate 4 Homies! (TCB = Takin' Care of Bizness)

Today Skate 4 Homies took care of some business... what did you do?

Here is a quick rundown of what we did today.

We got into New York City this morning at about 4:00 am. or so... right before the sun came up.  Whenever I get to New York first thing in the morning I always tell myself I'll rest up and relax, but I never do... I can't because I'm too excited!

So I tried to rest my eyes in the car for a bit when we rolled up to the World's Fair but that didn't last so Kilay and I set out for an early morning skate.  We grabbed some coffee and cruised around.  It was pretty amazing actually!

Later this morning we went over to the Cup Park where we met up with Ryan.  He's the grand master of the park and helping all the vendors get loaded in and set up. We asked what he had going on and if he needed help with anything- turns out he did!

We told Ryan to put us to work and it actually turned out to be a lot of fun.  We helped set up a bunch of picnic tables and tents for the booths and met a lot of the people that help make the Maloof Money Cup go down.

While we were setting up the tables we happened to see Steve Van Doren and got to meet him.  That was great and we told him how excited we are for the Vans Warped Tour in Utah in August.

There was a practice session today. We saw some people skate some sick lines during practice- this competition is going to be unreal!  Really can't believe we are here!!  The people at SkatePunk.Com posted some footy here.

There's also an interactive skate park at the Money Cup with a bunch of moveable stuff that was built by Joe C. from California Skate Parks.  It's actually a really big area so we helped with that.  We're gonna go back bright and early to help finish up.

It's almost as if Todd never left Salt Lake- he's still got that drill in hand!
When is he not putting together something to skate?
We really can't believe we're here!  We're stoked we got to contribute and help with the set-up today.

Still lots to do to get ready for the main event, including finishing setting up our own booth tomorrow.  Plus, we have some friends from Utah flying in to NYC tomorrow morning so we'll link up with them at some point. So awesome that they're coming out to support us and see the Money Cup!!

Oh ya, the only bad news today was my contact lens ripped... but luckily the people over at American Vision Center were able to set me up with a new pair!

Time to rest up--- deliriously tired!

We Made It To New York!! Next Stop Maloof Money Cup!

We drove for what feels like forever, but there's nothing like rolling into New York first thing in the morning!

Now that we're here, first things first... Kilay and I got in an early morning shred session around China Town.

We're On A Road To NoWhere...

This last week has been a little bit hectic for us here at Skate 4 Homies.

This art deck, created by artist Ryan Harrington, and others
can be seen on our website.
Last weekend we set up a mini skateboard park at the Urban Arts Fest. It was an arts festival celebrating local artists and performers, with proceeds benefiting Skate 4 Homies Foundation and Youth City. Needless to say, we had a lot to do to get ready for that event, including gathering about 70 old boards that were used by professional artists and those that attended the event to create works of art.  Awesome! We love using old decks for art- it helps give them a new life rather than filling up a landfill or making your mom mad because it's sitting in the garage taking up space. SO- if you have old decks, donate them to us.  We'll either refurbish them for use by the kids in our program or re-purpose them for art projects.

This week we've been gearing up for the Maloof Money Cup!  That's right! S4H got invited to debut our skate valet program at the Cup this weekend, June 4th and 5th in Queens, New York.  We couldn't be more excited! But, this is a big trip for us and it has been a little crazy around here getting ready for it.

For a while there we didn't even think we would make it because our fundraising hasn't gone as well as we had hoped, but we never give up and we fully believe in Skate 4 Homies, our mission and our program so we called upon friends and family who pitched in to help get us there.  So with their help and with the help from our intern, Byron, Skate 4 Homies is officially on the road... but not to nowhere, to the world's biggest skateboard competition!!

Todd, our founder, along with Byron, our fearless intern whom has helped us beyond words, and one of our volunteers, Kilay, are setting out to accomplish what we think is a manageable goal: spread the word about Skate 4 Homies and introduce our Skateboard Valet Parking Program.

When I helped pack the car (which is FULL to the brim and then some!) you could feel the excitement building as it started setting in that, yeah, they were on their way to the biggest skateboarding competition in the world and they aren't just going to be there watching it- they are actually going to be a part of it! So, after some last minute checking and re-checking to make sure they had everything they needed, the three of them squeezed themselves into the car and rolled out.

As they drove away I couldn't help but think of that song from The Hangover... not the "What Do Tigers Dream of Song" but the other one... "We're the three best friends that anybody could have, we're the three best friends that anyone could have, oh yes, we're the three best friends that anyone could have and we'll never ever ever ever ever leave each other..."

I guess we'll see if they're still friends after this long, cross-country road trip!

We hope to be posting more info about the trip each day so be sure to check back.  Oh, and check out our new logo on the Maloof Money Cup's website HERE.

Our new logo was created and donated to us by Tonya Yerty. She does graphic and web design so if you need something done check her out.
